Kim
and I were expecting a calm Spring Break this year. She was
putting the finishing touches on the nursery, and I had a list
of things to do (like put the car seat in the car).
All
that changed Monday night just after midnight when Kim's water
broke. This being our first baby, we weren't sure it really
had, but we checked in to the hospital to be on the safe side.
The due date wasn't until April 21, so we weren't sure what
would happen. Would we go home? Would they induce?
We didn't know...until Tuesday morning when the doctor checked
Kim out and said "You won't be leaving without a baby..."

Saturday, March 17...
One of those pictures on the roll you weren't expecting...no
pun intended. |

Dad with his "IV" at some point Tuesday... |
They
gave Kim steroids to help Jack's lungs develop, since there
was a small chance they weren't ready for the big-time. They
wanted 24 hours for them to work, so we waited. She was having
contractions, but they were very irregular and varied in intensity.
Kim's
mom flew up from Houston that evening. The funny thing is her
parents had come up last weekend to give us all the baby stuff
(stroller, bassinet, swing) we couldn't take back after Christmas.

Providence.Wednesday
night an ultrasound found Jack to be breech, so rather than
risk infection waiting for him to turn around, it was decided
to do a C-section.
At
9:05 he came into the world, scoring a "8 to 9" on
the Apgar
scale.

from surgery Wednesday night |

Welcome to the world, Jack! |
For
a few hours in the nursery he had a little breathing hood thingy
with some extra oxygen piped into it to ease breathing. An x-ray
showed some fluid in his lungs, but we're told that is common
with C-section babies since they don't go through the birth canal.
Soon he was weaned from that to normal air. |
|
He's
doing great now, and he and Kim are now trying to figure out
the nursing thing. They came home Friday night (and I did get
the car seat put in!).
